Learn about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for tonsil stones.
Tonsilloliths, or tonsil stones, are small, whitish-yellow growths that form in the cracks of the tonsils. They occur when food bits, germs, and dead cells get stuck in the tonsils and harden over time. While often not a major health issue, tonsil stones can cause bad breath, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and ear pain.
Tonsil stones are more common in kids and young adults, though older people can get them too. Symptoms include bad breath, throat discomfort, and coughs that won’t go away. If you experience these, a doctor can diagnose and recommend treatments such as self-removal, medicated gargles, or surgery for larger stones.
Preventive care, such as good oral hygiene, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol, can help prevent tonsil stones. Though typically not dangerous, persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
