What it means when your body jerks as you fall asleep

Hypnic jerks, or sleep starts, are involuntary muscle contractions that create a falling sensation while transitioning from wakefulness to sleep.

Though their exact cause is unknown, theories suggest the brain misinterprets muscle relaxation as actual falling, prompting a jolt. Stress, caffeine, physical exhaustion, sleep deprivation, nighttime exercise, and nicotine can increase their frequency.

 

While harmless, frequent hypnic jerks can affect sleep quality. To reduce them, adopt better sleep habits: maintain consistent sleep schedules, keep the bedroom dark and cool (65–68°F), avoid electronics an hour before bed, and limit caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine intake
